Workshop on ‘Register and Style in Academic Writing: Learn to Avoid the Common mistakes’

The English Zone of the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh organized a student workshop titled ‘Register and Style in Academic Writing: Learn to Avoid the Common mistakes’ On 12 April, Monday, 2021. The workshop was facilitated by Iram Mehrin, lecturer, the Center for Language Studies, ULAB. The resource person discussed the four principles of the register of academic writing: formality, efficiency, modesty and clarity with examples of mistakes in these areas. There were practice activities and self-evaluation surveys in the workshop for students. Participants reflected on their present academic language and identified the common mistakes with the help of the evaluation survey. In addition to that, they participated in the practice activities on the four principles of academic writing to avoid making common mistakes. Around the end, there was a small question-answer session where questions regarding specific writing problems from students were addressed by the resource person and appropriate practice approaches were suggested.
