The Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh organized a virtual workshop on “Writing Statements of Purpose” on September 2, 2022. The session was conducted by Dr. Sohana Manzoor, Associate Professor, DEH. The workshop aimed to enlighten DEH’s thesis/internship/non-thesis students of the Summer 2022 term about the standard procedures and techniques for writing a flawless Statement of Purpose which is one of the most crucial documents that the students will need while applying for higher studies abroad.

The facilitator started the workshop by explaining what a Statement of Purpose (SoP) is and where the students may need to submit it in the future. In addition, students were also given a brief overview of the necessary documents that are required for applying for higher studies. Next, the facilitator mentioned the basic information that the applicants must gather before starting to write the Statement of Purpose (SoP) to fulfill the requirements of the university and the subject they are applying for. Thereafter, the facilitator discussed in detail the components of the SoPs and how to portray applicants’ achievements, personal experiences, and true interest in the degree they are applying for.

Towards the end of the workshop, a few samples of good SoPs were shown to the participants to exemplify and sum up the significant points that were discussed throughout the session. This interactive workshop ended with a few more questions from the participants, where the facilitator provided her valuable insights into the queries and concerns that the students raised.

This workshop is part of the series of mandatory workshops designed especially for students of ENG413/498/499 each term.
