The Summer '23 Orientation Ceremony of the incoming students of the BA and MA programs in the Department of English and Humanities, ULAB, was held on June 1, 2023 at ULAB Permanent Campus premises.  The Orientation theme was “Shine Bright,” keeping in mind the objective of introducing the freshers to the faculty members, the facilities, and the opportunities that can help them make the best use of their university life.

Before the Orientation formally began, Ms. Nusrat Tajkia, Lecturer, DEH and BA Coordinator, provided the students with an overview of the relevant department and university policies and facilities like the English Zone, on-campus work opportunities, as well as the important administrative contacts and Teaching Assistants.

The formal program began with a welcome speech by the Head of the Department, Ms. Arifa Ghani Rahman, who also introduced the faculty members, the Teaching Assistants, and admin officers.

Following this, Professor Kaiser Haq, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, showered the students with his words of wisdom and advised students to “be confident.” Professor Syed Manzoorul Islam, then addressed the students with advice to become involved in the many opportunities at the university. Professor Shamsad Mortuza, Special Advisor to the ULAB Board of Trustees, spoke about ULAB, its origin, the Board of Directors, and its liberal arts philosophy.

The Orientation Speaker, Ms. Humaira Chowdhury, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Frontier Technology Ltd., then addressed the students in a warm, interactive session. She shared her personal experiences on how she became an entrepreneur in a field where women are few. She discussed ideas for being proactive and shared numerous life lessons. After her session, a token of appreciation was handed over to her by the Head of the Department.

New MA student, Sadia Mukarrama (Batch 232), and BA student, Aiman Swaad Ahmad, spoke to the audience about their experiences at ULAB and DEH so far. They were very excited to be able to become a part of this prestigious institution. In the cultural segment, Joye Florence Rozario (Batch 222), Shafiullah Quaraisy Sotto (Batch 222), and Marzuk Ahmed Khan Mojlish (Batch 182) with Alen Henry Costa (Batch 211), sang some wonderful songs, and Tabassum Hossain Supti (Batch 222) performed a dance.

A special segment was conducted by MA Coordinator, Ms. Nadia Rahman, to hand over Certificates of Participation to all the students who took part in the Graduate Student Seminar since its inception last year. 21 students received certificates that were handed over by Professor Shamsad Mortuza and Professor Kaiser Haq.

The Orientation concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Nusrat Tajkia. The event was hosted by Adrita Chowdhury (Batch 223).
