Brimming with excitement and eagerness, ULAB’s Department of English and Humanities arranged its Orientation Program to welcome the incoming batches of BA and MA students this Fall 2024 on October 24, 2024. The event was centered on the theme “Adventures Await!” and the Orientation Speaker was Ms. Shahnaz Gazi, Director General, Foreign Service Academy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The People’s Republic of Bangladesh.

The Orientation Speaker, Ms. Shahnaz Gazi gave a moving address by expressing her heartfelt gratitude to ULAB for its role in shaping her daughter, an alumna of DEH, into the person she is today. She reminisced about her high school days and her path toward her career as a civil service officer to her current position as Director General of the Foreign Service Academy. Ms. Gazi highlighted the importance of establishing a career, particularly for the female students, before considering other aspects of life.

The event began with the welcome speech by Ms. Arifa Ghani Rahman, Head and Associate Professor of the Department. She offered the students guidance on making the most of their time at university and developing into individuals to be proud of. Ms. Rahman introduced the leading figures of the department: the professors, the admin, the Teaching Assistants, and the Advisor to the English Zone. Shortly after, the other faculty members were invited to introduce themselves.

Professor Kaiser Haq, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities delivered his welcome speech to the freshers where he underscored the importance of prioritizing academics while also making the most of the university experience. Then Professor Shamsad Mortuza, Special Advisor to the ULAB Board of Trustees, in his remarks, praised the young generation for the courage and determination they have shown in the recent events. He noted the diversity of the interdisciplinary courses and the varied specializations of the DEH faculty members as well those of other departments at ULAB.

The cultural segment featured a beautiful rendition of Tagore’s poem, “Nirjhorer Shopnobhongo” by Tasnimah Tusty of Batch 242, and an enthralling dance performance by the trio of Prity, Anika, and, Akhi of Batch 233. This was followed by a melodious duet performed by Kaisarul Islam and Tashpia Tahasin of Batch 242. The segment concluded with an energetic dance performance by incoming student Protiva of Batch 243.

Ms. Neha Ghose, Lecturer and Advisor to the English Zone, introduced the functions of the English Zone and requested students to visit.

After the gift-giving ceremony to the Orientation Speaker, the event ended with a vote of thanks by Ms. Jahanara Tariq, Lecturer, DEH. 

The program was organized by Batches 233, 241, and 242 with the assistance of their Batch Managers, Ms. Jahanara Tariq, Ms. Irtifa Hasan, and Mr. Golam Kader Zilany. The event was brought to a close after a photo session with the freshers, the faculty, the volunteers, and the guest.
