Seminar: “Engaging in Scholarly Writing for Research and Publication”
On July 17, 2025, the Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) hosted a seminar titled “Engaging in Scholarly Writing for Research and Publication.” The speaker was Mohammad Mosiur Rahman, a doctoral candidate at the Department of English and Communication at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Hong Kong. Mr. Rahman is also a Senior Lecturer of DEH, currently on study leave.
Rudaiba Mahbub (Batch 243), Graduate Teaching Assistant, DEH, commenced the program by welcoming the students and faculty members present in the audience, and introduced Mr. Rahman by sharing his academic and professional background.
Mr. Rahman began his talk by discussing the importance of research thesis publications in reputable journals, which can allow students to gain scholarships in universities abroad. A key factor that Mr. Rahman mentioned was the need to attend conferences to gain knowledge and ideas on researchable topics, along with building connections and networks with capable, experienced and knowledgeable researchers. Afterwards, he instructed the students to participate in a session where they submitted a research topic into a database that Mr. Rahman had prepared. After checking the students’ responses, he highlighted the importance of specificity in terms of selecting a research topic.
Mr. Rahman explained the proper method of establishing research topics that are detailed, specific, and focus on areas of interest and relevance. He reflected that topics that have not been studied very much and have deficiencies and gaps are the best ones to choose for writing a research paper on. He also indicated the importance of relevancy in selecting a research topic which can have the potential to reach larger audiences.
Mr. Rahman then engaged in a brief question-and-answer session with the students. He then continued by explaining a number of steps and strategies for writing proper and impactful research papers, which can also gain the potential for publication in international journals. He began by discussing the title and abstract, followed through with the problem statement, methodology, theoretical framework, and conceptual framework.
Afterwards, another short question-and-answer session took place where Mr. Rahman addressed the queries of some students and engaged in a valuable discussion about research paper publications in both local and international journals.
Finally, Mr. Rahman discussed a few important reasons why research papers receive rejections from international journals and how students can tackle these obstacles and get their research papers published.
The insightful and engaging seminar was concluded by Ms. Nadia Rahman, Assistant Professor, DEH, who delivered a vote of thanks and gratitude to Mr. Rahman and encouraged the students to write and publish their own research papers. The seminar ended with a group photo session.
