Student Workshop I: Writing CVs and Cover Letters

On July 24, 2025, the Department of English and Humanities (DEH) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) organized a workshop titled “Writing CVs and Cover Letters.” The session was conducted by Ms. Nadia Rahman, Assistant Professor, DEH, and was designed for final-semester undergraduate students enrolled in ENG 4208, ENG 4298, and ENG 4299, as well as MA students.

The purpose of the workshop was to help students understand how to structure and present their CVs professionally and effectively. Ms. Rahman explained that a CV should mention key aspects such as academic qualifications, skills, interests, voluntary work, and other relevant experiences. She emphasized that clarity and honesty are more important than excessive creativity, encouraging students to focus on self-assessment and proper organization.

One crucial point of discussion was the difference between a CV and a resume. Ms. Rahman clarified that while both documents serve similar purposes, a CV tends to be more detailed and comprehensive. In contrast, a resume is typically shorter and more focused on recent or role-specific achievements. She also outlined the essential components of a well-written CV, such as updated contact information, education history, work or internship experience, achievements, and skills.

Lastly, to help students describe their experiences more effectively, she introduced the use of action verbs and suggested thinking about whether their roles involved working with people, data, or objects. Ms. Rahman briefly noted that cover letters should be short, job-specific, and reflect the applicant’s potential contribution to the organization.

Overall, the workshop provided students with structured guidance and practical strategies for presenting their academic and professional profiles effectively, thereby enhancing their preparedness for entering the job market.
