Orientation Spring 2026: “Becoming”
The Department of English and Humanities at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) conducted its Spring 2026 orientation on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at its permanent campus. The theme for the event was “Becoming” to indicate the timeless process of always becoming a better being. The orientation took place with the participation of a room full of enthusiastic students from the BA and MA programs of Batch 261.
The Orientation Speaker was Ms. Rifat Anjum Pia, an alumna of ULAB, a writer, and the Assistant Commissioner (Land) in Faridpur under the BCS Administration Cadre, who shared her insights using her own career decisions and difficulties she encountered in her journey to inspire the students to think out of the box. She also provided important details for those who might seek a future in the corporate world, creative writing, or even the Government sector.
The program began with the opening speech by Ms. Arifa Ghani Rahman, Head and Associate Professor of the department. Ms. Rahman commented on the enthusiasm shown by members of the batch already and advised them to keep it up by participating in the many department activities that happen on campus. The speech was followed by an introduction of all the faculty members, who welcomed the students and echoed the Head’s words to encourage the new students to become a member of the DEH team.
Prof. Kaiser Haq, Dean, School of Arts and Humanities, spoke about techniques students can adapt for improving their cognitive abilities in an era of doomscrolling and constant distractions. He encouraged the students not only to read widely but also to think critically, independently, and let their inner creativity flourish.
Professor Shamsad Mortuza, Special Advisor to ULAB’s Board of Trustees, offered students advice that would help them navigate through their upcoming undergraduate and graduate studies journey.
Professor Mahmud Hasan Khan spoke to students about the importance of language in careers, individual growth, and creating unique scopes to contribute to the world using various skills of language.
Professor Abdullah Al Mahmud enlightened the new students with his spiritual quotations and profound knowledge of different widely used languages in which he is conversant.
The orientation also had a range of cultural performances at the end, with freshers’ speeches, poetry recitation, songs, and dance performances. Afifa Islam (251) from MA, Barkan Bashir Anas (261), Jannatul Ferdous (261), Md. Rifah Inbe Jafor (261), Suhorat Nubah (253), and Sumiya Sikder Easha (261) from the BA program showcased their amazing talents, giving the event some much-needed entertainment as well as showcasing the enthusiasm and drive that the 261 batch has.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Vincent Dip Gomes, Lecturer, Department of English and Humanities.
