Student Workshop: Writing CVs and Cover Letters
The Department of English and Humanities (DEH) at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh organized a workshop titled “CV and Cover Letter Writing” on Thursday, March 14, 2026. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Nadia Rahman, Assistant Professor, DEH. The session was designed for undergraduate students enrolled in the courses ENG 4208, ENG 4298, and ENG 4299. The graduate students were also encouraged to attend the workshop. The goal of the session was to assist the students in revising their CVs.
Ms. Rahman commenced the session by assigning a self-assessment task to the students, where they were encouraged to reflect on their academic interests and career aspirations. Ms. Rahman then presented a skills inventory and asked the students to identify the skills they possessed. She stressed the importance of being specific about one’s skills and expertise in one’s CV. A couple of students’ CVs were also reviewed by the facilitator, and the rest of the students were encouraged to update theirs according to the suggestions and feedback provided. For the next task, the students were asked to identify their strong suits by reflecting on their biggest accomplishments. Each of these tasks was designed to allow the students to evaluate themselves properly on the basis of the academic and extracurricular experiences they garnered. A sample CV was presented to the students for an enhanced understanding of how they could structure and streamline their CVs.
In the Cover Letter segment of the workshop, Ms. Rahman underscored the importance of three particular aspects of writing a cover letter: tailoring the letter in a way where the skill set aligns with the ones in the job description, exemplifying how one can contribute to the betterment of the institution they are applying to, and telling an impactful story without reiterating the content of their resume. Afterwards, a basic format for a credible cover letter was shown to the students. The workshop was concluded with a checklist of things one must be mindful of when writing their CV.
The self-assessment tasks that the session comprised allowed the students to be certain and confident about their strengths and skills. Overall, the workshop provided the students with practical insights into career planning, which were immensely valuable for students who are about to step into the job market.
