DEH Curriculum Integration (CI) Project

The Department of English and Humanities launched its Curriculum Integration Program in Fall 2019.

Rationale and Objectives

In line with the vision of the Department of English and Humanities, the Curriculum Integration (CI) Program aims at broadening students’ knowledge beyond the classroom, by instilling essential skill-sets in them in an interesting way.

The goal is to hone students’ creative and critical thinking ability that can be demonstrated through various small projects across multiple courses integrated by a unifying theme.

A topic/concept of global significance is chosen, keeping in mind its broader relevance to all of us as individuals and social beings, and applied to the study of all relevant courses being taught in the department. The driving force of this initiative is to provide students with a critical lens with which to make sense of the society around them, making them more observant and informed citizens.

The CI provides a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between multiple academic streams (Literature, Linguistics, Cultural Studies), making it possible to learn from each other and provide an expansive intellectual grounding across different specializations.

The CI is also a great way to assess what students can do with the set of analytical tools being provided to them in the classroom at different levels. By encouraging students to make connections between a concept of global significance and their course contents, this exercise boosts students’ confidence in handling application of theories in a much smaller and, hence, less daunting scale.

The Forums

The CI Program involves two expert-led forums in which scholars explore the chosen concept from linguistics, language teaching, and literary standpoints, offering critical insights. Students then take the insights and apply them in projects.

The program concludes with the exhibition of student projects, which are evaluated based on originality, depth, relevance, coherence and cohesion of content, creativity, effective time management, and appropriate use of language.

At the end of the term, selected projects are showcased and a prize-giving ceremony is held to award the best three projects across all courses. An independent panel of judges, comprising faculty members from non-participating courses, evaluate the projects. All projects are required to clearly demonstrate a meaningful connection to the theme and the corresponding course content.

Project Types (may include but are not limited to):

  1. Live drama or performance
  2. Posters, paintings, scrapbooks, or any form of digital or traditional artwork, to be presented and explained
  3. Project presentation or live presentation
  4. Documentary
  5. Short film or video project
  6. Creative designs, models, or other innovative visual or multimodal projects, to be presented and explained
