DEH Welcomes Freshers at Spring 2017 Orientation
On February 9, the Department of English and Humanities held an exciting and fun-filled program to welcome the Spring 2017 term undergraduate and MA freshers to ULAB in the university’s auditorium.
After a welcome address by the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, Prof. Kaiser Haq, the Vice Chancellor of ULAB, Prof. Imran Rahman, took the stage to welcome and inspire the students to make the best out of their next four years of university life by not only studying hard but playing hard as well. He strongly encouraged students to attend the numerous programs constantly happening at ULAB and to join the clubs to enhance their extra-curricular activities.
To give the students an insight into the varied opportunities available to English graduates, a special guest was invited from the industry. Ms. Syeda Durdana Kabir spoke about her journey from her graduation from the English Department at Dhaka University to her current position as Director HR of Nestle Bangladesh. Ms. Kabir stressed on the importance of being brave and stepping out of one’s comfort zone. She also talked about the necessity of sometimes accepting positions that were not compatible with one’s goals but which may help to get one’s foot in the door. This is important, especially if one wants to work for a certain organization. Ms. Kabir’s final word of advice was to enjoy student life and have fun.
The cultural section of the program was organized by Paper Canoe, ULAB’s Literary Society and comprised some brilliant student performances such as songs and dances. The highlight of this section was a fantastic skit based on Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie written by Jacklin Pew Bose and Farzana Haque, students of DEH.
The program ended with an introduction to the faculty members and a vote of thanks by the head of department, Prof. Shamsad Mortuza.
