Our Mission
Run under the guidance of the Department of English and Humanities and located on the Library’s Mezzanine Floor, the English Zone helps students grow as writers and speakers. Students can practice their writing and speaking skills by engaging in collaborative discussions with peer tutors in a fun, comfortable, non-judgemental environment.
Everyone needs help sometimes. So any student at any level, studying any discipline, working on any assignment, at any stage of the writing process, is welcome to either set up an appointment for longer sessions or walk in with problems that require a shorter time to address.
To schedule an appointment, email [email protected] or walk in during office hours!
Office Hours (during the semester):
Monday-Wednesday: 9.00 am - 5.00 pm
For Graduate Students, extra hours are offered as follows:
Friday: 12:00 - 3.00 pm
Saturday: 9.00 - 10.00 am and 1.00 - 2.00 pm
We help students
- identify and understand basic grammar problems in their writing
- understand assignment instructions
- brainstorm and outline ideas
- organize writing for better clarity
- revise their writing according to teacher or peer feedback
- fix citations and documentation
We DO NOT
- proofread or rewrite papers for students
- tell students what to say, but we can help to brainstorm.
- evaluate or grade student writing
Workshops
The English Zone organizes workshops on different aspects of writing as well as Conversation Hours. Workshops are conducted by the peer tutors, the English Zone Advisor, or faculty members from different departments. During Conversation Hours, a guest faculty is invited to have an “adda” with students to help ease the anxiety about speaking English.
Students are welcome to propose topics for workshops.
Peer Tutors Capable students can apply to volunteer as Peer Tutors at the English Zone. Work hours depend on the students’ schedules and can be selected by the students with no minimum number of hours. Peer Tutors receive a nominal per hour payment and a certificate at the end of the semester.
