After a series of impactful theses defenses and presentations by the graduating students of BA and MA in English students of the Fall 2024, the Department of English and Humanities at ULAB held its Commencement Ceremony on January 9, 2025. The event, themed “Turning the Page,” symbolized the graduates' transition to new chapters in their lives.

The Head of the Department, Ms. Arifa Ghani Rahman, inaugurated the event with an inspiring speech filled with humor, encouraging graduates to carry forward the lessons learned and to make meaningful contributions to society with their skills and knowledge. Professor Kaiser Haq, Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities, ULAB, followed with a thought-provoking speech on the importance of embracing critical thinking and civic responsibilities in addressing real-world complexities. His words highlighted the enduring value of their academic training.

Special Advisor to the ULAB Board of Trustees, Professor Shamsad Mortuza, reflected on the transformative nature of the English program. He emphasized how it nurtures adaptability, resilience, and a deep understanding of human experiences, all essential qualities for navigating the future.

Adding a dynamic and engaging element to the program, a Word Association game was conducted by hosts, Fatema Aftab Miah and Marifa Khan (both from Batch 211), eliciting much laughter and fun among the faculty and graduating students.

The commencement speaker, Ms. Neha Ghose, captivated the audience with her inspiring address. She shared her personal journey, acknowledging the uncertainties of postgraduate life and how those challenges ultimately shaped her purpose. Her experiences highlighted the versatility of the English program, emphasizing its role in preparing students for multifaceted professional landscapes. Her speech concluded with heartfelt wishes for the graduating batch. In an unexpected and delightful moment, Ms. Neha Ghose surprised everyone by singing a heartfelt song after her speech.

The ceremony continued with an experience-sharing session where students were invited to reflect on their time at ULAB. Their stories, filled with gratitude and cherished memories, resonated deeply with the audience.

The program concluded with a presentation of the keepsake brochure, a vote of thanks by lecturer Mehek Chowdhury, and a group photo session.

The ceremony was hosted by emcee, Ayesha Siddika (Batch 213).
